Less than 72 hours after hoisting the Memorial Cup on home ice, the Windsor Spitfires took the streets to celebrate the franchise’s third championship with fans, parading the prestigious trophy down Ouellette Avenue.

They couldn’t have asked for better weather either as the sun shone down on the lengthy caravan that greeted supporters down a stretch headed toward the banks of the Detroit River.

“The fan support here is great, just unbelievable,” Spits forward Jeremy Bracco told CTV Windsor’s Angelo Aversa. “This is the first parade I’ve ever been a part of. To see all of these people come out to the final game and then be here again to see us today is a pretty special feeling.”

A second round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs who was acquired by the Spitfires midseason, Bracco reflected on the journey that led to the club’s resurgence when it mattered most.

“The London series didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but we came back 44 days later and got the job done.

“I think we learned how to come together,” he continued. “We had a lot of hard things that we had to battle through together. We had a lot of love in our room and we became pretty close over those 44 days. It was hard but it was a lot of fun.”

Spitfires head coach Rocky Thompson took the opportunity to thank his players as well as the Windsor fans for their loyal support.

“They’ve made me better,” he said of his team. “It’s been special and we’ll be able to remember this for the rest of our lives and I also have to thank you, the fans, for that.”

The Spitfires are the 10th team in Mastercard Memorial Cup history to hoist the trophy on home ice and the first OHL club to do so since the 2005 London Knights. The Memorial Cup returns to the Ontario Hockey League for a league record third straight year.
